Visual Designer at AbbVie
For the entirety of my senior year of college and after graduation throughout the beginning of 2024, I interned as a visual designer with AbbVie, which turned into an after-college job. I worked as the sole designer on the SPARK team, a team within AbbVie that works with employee-generated start-up teams that are critical in supporting AbbVie’s ambitious environmental sustainability targets, which include reducing absolute carbon emissions, waste to landfills, and water usage.
My task was to create two 100+ page digital magazines that reported on each of the 13 teams from this year (one for 2022 and one for 2023). Did they achieve their target goals? Did they save AbbVie more money than expected? Through visually pleasing layouts and images, I was able to create magazines sent out to over 10,000+ AbbVie employees worldwide, while learning to comply with brand guidelines and working with other people from all different fields.
When the magazine was finally complete, I worked on environmental infographic charts to show AbbVie’s water, waste, and energy from past years and future target projections, branding for a data science conference, and stickers for a booth at their Annual Celebration of Science. I was also available for anything that was needed from a design standpoint: video editing, logo design, etc.
SPARK!
Employees who step up to the Spark Innovation Accelerator challenge are challenged to pitch solutions in one of four key areas: energy, water, waste, & engagement. With 100+ ideas submitted, each year 10-20 are selected to move forward, with mentors and additional resources provided to each team as they look to achieve environmental milestones. And here’s the magazine that says it all!
Layout:
Because there are so many teams to report on, the layout I created had to be well-suited for duplication with different colors, images, and text. Through multiple meetings, iterations, and working with my colleagues, I was able to create the perfect one to convey our important messages. The magazine was critiqued and approved every step of the way by each team, my bosses, fellow students, and other colleagues involved. (Words have been changed to Lorem Ipsum and pictures have been blurred for security and legal reasons).

Other Pages:
Although most of the magazine was focused on the 13 teams that were working on their start-up ideas to reduce either waste, water, or energy, there were many supplemental pages that had to be created like employee spotlights, introductions, transition pages, updates from past years, opening and closing stories, etc. that I created. And throughout my many months on this project, I have become extremely proficient with the Adobe InDesign software.
Infographic Charts:
For years, AbbVie had conveyed its progress throughout the years with boring line graphs and pie charts, so I decided to completely redo them in a fun, colorful, and easy way to understand since these were on display for anyone to see, not just scientists and AbbVie employees. Adobe Illustrator being my favorite of the Adobe Suite, this project was so much fun and a really awesome experience taking numbers and bringing them to life.

Data Science Branding:
This year, a brand new conference is being held in October for all of AbbVie’s data scientists, so I was tasked to create the branding on this. Although still a work in progress, I have created a background graphic that will be used throughout the event on name tags, slideshows, posters, projector screens, flyers, etc., and a few potential designs have been created for some of these deliverables.
Stickers:
One of the teams that works with SPARK created biodegradable rubber gloves for the labs, and they were showing them off at the 2023 AbbVie Annual Celebration of Science. They wanted cute stickers they could hand out to kids and parents to show off their idea, as well as unveil a new team called “ignite". They asked me to create 3 stickers, so I made sure they were fun, colorful, and easy to understand!
